Collage is the key that unlocks my subconscious, visually.
I have always been fascinated with the subconscious — whether in the interpretation of dreams, or in the deeper readings of myths and fairytales, or while watching the films I have always loved the most, like those of Federico Fellini or Ingmar Bergman.
These artworks erupted out of me like a furious and delicious volcano in 2008 — one of the most intense, disruptive, transformative and beautiful periods of my life — and collage turned out to be the perfect medium to explore and express this crazy transition.
What I love about collage is the process of the “treasure hunt.” Here is where my subconscious gets to lead the way. The process of finding images within so many different books, magazines, photographs, papers, paints, and objects is what allows my mind to quiet, and my subconscious to speak. Often I won’t understand why I have chosen a particular image, or what the piece as a whole is saying to me until it is nearly finished. Then it is like a dream that I get the joy of interpreting — and every time it takes my breath away when I discover how lucidly and poetically my subconscious has expressed itself through the combination of images, colors, and design.
